Threads of Hope—Past, Present and Future: Harriet Tubman Feature

International Women's Day

Threads of Hope—Past: Harriet Tubman Feature

March is Women’s History Month and Friday is International Women’s Day! We would like to take this week to highlight influential women who are working to bring about change. We wish to create a thread of hope to signify historical women from generations gone by and those to come. We’d like to also highlight women in our local community who are doing the same. These women have made a monumental impact and what they all have in common is how they have threaded hope into their generation. First, let’s look at the trailblazer who changed our world for the better:

Harriet Tubman

Activist, Civil Rights Activist (c. 1820–1913)

“I had reasoned this out in my mind, there was one of two things I had a right to, liberty or death; if I could not have one, I would have the other.” - Harriet Tubman

Harriet Tubman escaped to freedom in the North in 1849 to become the most famous "conductor" on the Underground Railroad. Tubman risked her life to lead hundreds of family members and other slaves from the plantation system to freedom. She left behind a larger than life, legacy, widely-known and well-respected while she was alive, she became an American icon after her passing. She continues to inspire generations of Americans with her bravery and bold action.

Harriet Tubman left behind a larger than life, legacy, widely-known and well-respected while she was alive, she became an American icon after her passing. She is known as one of the most famous civilians in American history before the Civil War.

When we look back on her history, we see how she continually threaded hope for not only the people she helped but for generations to come. It’s important to look to the women who have paved the way before us and move forward with vigor in honor of the passion they exhibited.
