You may have heard the phrase ‘party with a purpose’ – a concept used by a number of nonprofits when it comes to bringing people together around a central cause. On Saturday, February 22nd, Rethreaded, a young nonprofit here in Jacksonville and the top votes winner at One Spark 2013, is hosting its annual fundraising event, the Mukti Freedom Fundraiser. This year’s event is staged to be a very special event as the organization hosts guests at its very own warehouse space and shares one of its signature projects as the bell of the ball.
The word ‘Mukti’ in Bengali means Freedom and that is exactly what Rethreaded is doing for those trapped by the sex trade right here in Jacksonville, FL., and worldwide. Through love and life-giving community Rethreaded offers women an opportunity to learn a new trade and life skills through a four-month training program where they are taught the skills to become artisan seamstresses. After graduation from the program they have the opportunity to be employed at Rethreaded’s up-cycling business, where T-shirts are made into new products. The purpose of the Mukti Freedom Fundraiser is to raise the funds needed to offer women the training program.
This year’s event will also share with guests one of the organization’s top-selling products and the first product a new employee learns to make in the training program, the Grace Scarf. The whole event will be entwined with Grace and all the ways Rethreaded is ‘Sewing a New Story through Grace.’ Mukti will have several special guest speakers including Hailey Winslow, Reporter for WJXT, Angelica Spear, Special Assistant to the Mayor/Community Engagement Officer, Angyln Cadwell, the first graduate of Rethreaded’s training program, and Kristin Keen, Executive Director of Rethreaded.
While this event will be full of purpose, the event committee has also worked hard to ensure it is a party, not to be missed! The event will start with a cocktail hour with beer and wine service and special musical guests. Immediately following dinner and the program, an after party will commence with more musical guests and a DJ for dancing, fellowship and good fun. Throughout the night everyone will have the opportunity to browse and purchase any of the products sold by Rethreaded.
The Mukti Freedom Fundraiser is sure to be a ‘party with a purpose’ that you do not want to miss! It is an opportunity to learn more about Rethreaded, enjoy good food and drink and have a great time while supporting an organization that gives back to the Jacksonville community.
